Board of Trustees
The masjid is governed by a Board of Trustees registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria. The names and roles of the current trustees, as filed on our registration, are being published here. For the register in the meantime, please contact the masjid office.
Governing Objectives
Katampe Estates Omar Ibn Al-Khattab Masjid exists to establish and maintain a place of worship for the Muslim community of Katampe Estates and the surrounding areas of Abuja. Our first purpose is the advancement of religion: keeping the five daily congregational prayers, Jumu'ah, Tarawih and the Eid prayers established, maintaining the prayer facilities, and providing the imamate and khutbah for the community.
Our second purpose is the advancement of education. The masjid teaches the Qur'an, Tajweed, Arabic language and Islamic studies to children and adults without charge wherever we are able to do so, through a weekend madrasah, adult classes, a sisters' learning circle and a youth halaqah. No student is turned away for inability to contribute.
Our third purpose is the relief of poverty and the welfare of the community. The masjid receives and distributes Zakat to eligible recipients, provides Sadaqah support to households in hardship, conducts Nikah ceremonies and funeral rites, offers counselling and support to new Muslims, and works with neighbours of all faiths on matters affecting the local community.
No part of the masjid's income or property is paid or transferred, directly or indirectly, to any trustee by way of profit or dividend. Trustees serve voluntarily and may be reimbursed only for reasonable expenses properly incurred on behalf of the masjid.
How Donations and Zakat Are Used
Zakat is held in a separate fund from all other income. It is distributed only to the categories of recipient specified in the Qur'an (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60), primarily to poor and indebted households in Katampe Estates and the surrounding communities. Zakat is never spent on buildings, salaries or running costs.
Sadaqah and general donations pay for the running of the masjid: electricity and water, cleaning and maintenance of the prayer halls and wudu areas, teaching materials for the madrasah, and support for our teachers.
Building fund contributions are restricted to construction, repair and expansion of the masjid premises.
Donations designated for a specific purpose are used only for that purpose. The Board of Trustees keeps records of income and expenditure, and any donor may request a summary of how funds in a given period were applied.
